Happy 4th Anniversary, Whales And Games! Onwards to Unexplored Games!

Happy 4th Anniversary Whales And Games!

Happy 4th Anniversary, Whales And Games! 🎊🐳 Pinch us in the cheeks because it’s hard to believe that we’re already headed into our fifth year! In the world of indie game development, four years feels like a lifetime. We’ve come a long way during these last years, with our games and as the people behind them.

Highlights from our 4th Year
Highlights from our 4th Year!

Thank you to everyone that has supported us on the journey so far! From our family and friends to our community. From the people that have played our twelve games to the artists that keep celebrating our wonderful cast of characters!

As we wrote at the beginning of the year, there’s a lot we have in the plans for this upcoming year. In this post, we want to go a bit more in-depth into some of those plans! Before that, however, and as tradition calls it, we’ve got a celebratory artwork featuring our mascots dressed-up for the occasion! We’ve also had the opportunity to commission both Wearepopcandies and CuckyUncle for some custom anniversary artwork! You can find them both at the footer of this post! 🤗

This year we’re going with a red and yellow theme for our anniversary. The world needs more warm colours at times! 💖🐇

Happy 4th Anniversary, Whales And Games!
Happy 4th Anniversary, Whales And Games!

Last year, we mentioned how our third year felt like it had been more about achievements satellite to our games, than about game development itself. With our fourth year, our goal was to begin work on a commercial game. We wanted to do that, while also progressively returning to other game projects on the side as we went along.

Gladly, this past year, we surely worked on games! During our participation at Art Fight, we released Art Fight Duel, bringing together the characters from several digital artists. On Ludum Dare 47, we put adorable doggies into office chairs and created Woofice Chair. In the past months, we also participated in Global Game Jam and developed Townseek, an exploration trading game, which we’ve continued adding to.

And of course, there’s everything else too! Last year, we organized several community server events, we revamped several of our characters including Whalechan redesign, we launched our growing Instagram and LinkedIn pages, and we even hit 1000 followers on Twitter right before this post! 🎉

Art Fight Duel

However, what you’re likely curious about is Bunny Splash Casino. If you’re unacquainted with the game, during Whipped And Steamy’s anniversary, we introduced it as our first commercial game. Bunny Splash Casino is a full-blown, adults-only, erotic management simulation game. While being a new game, it follows the footsteps of character development we settled with Whipped And Steamy. 👀

Our first experiences with the game’s production were a bit rocky and we shelved it for a while. Back in November, feeling ready, we rebooted development. Since then, we’ve been working on it at a great pace! Currently, we’re working on character designs, creating key artwork and developing the core game!

We want to start bringing you news about Bunny Splash Casino regularly in the next few months. We will be doing it through its Twitter account (adults-only, mind you) and through these Voyage Journals! Even with its mature label and its initial development woes, this is a project that we’re really proud of.

The setting of the Eden Strip and its inhabitants are diverse and full-of-character! We can’t wait to show you the sexy shenanigans they’ll be getting into! 😊

Treasure Projects

Beyond the work that we have been doing for Bunny Splash Casino, we have also established a routine where we get the final part of each work day for side-projects and other ideas we want to do and develop as Whales And Games. This allows us to stay fresh and push new content even while we are working on Bunny Splash Casino.

However, all of the work and potential release dates that we have for these side-gigs are extremely volatile. They’re like little treasures we can work on the side of our main project if there’s an opportunity. Therefore, we call these Treasure Projects! ✨

As such, let’s get into some headlines of these that we’ve been working on during these past few months and where they are headed:

Townseek Screenshot
Fishing in Townseek
  • Let’s start with the aforementioned Townseek from the previous section. While we were originally going to release it after the Lunar New Year, we’ve decided to spend some extra time adding Fishing and extra polish to it! We hope to potentially release it sometime after our anniversary. 🎣
  • For the rest of the Whales And Games backlog, we also have Roboto Repairaton and the ever-infamous Colossorama – The Champions Update. They’re still on the plans and we’ve already made changes to both of them this year, but we’re not aiming to release them anytime soon.
  • Speaking of jam games, we’re considering participating in Ludum Dare 48 this month! If we do participate, you can look forward to a new game jam experience between the 23rd April to 26th April!
  • On our community server, we will be releasing our new Community roles next month! For the creative folks, we’ll be granting the brand new Community Creative! And for those of you there developing your own games, we will also have the Community Gamedev role. Stay tuned at our server for upcoming news!
  • Finally, over the course of the past years, we’ve experimented with rebranding multiple times, but never carried it through. Sometime in the next months, we really want to give a brand new fresh coat of paint to our logo and presentation, similar to what we have already done with Whalechan, Polite Whale, Dapperchan and our other characters!

One of our goals this year is to continue working on Treasure Projects alongside our work in Bunny Splash Casino. We hope to continue participating in game jams, and continue creating new interesting side-experiences! 🙌

As a side-thing, at the beginning of the year, our team challenged itself to what we dubbed the Whales of Culture challenge. For each book read, movie or series watched and game played, each of us scores points.

While we’re doing it for self-gamification, we wanted to bring some of our personal selves into this anniversary report, and tell you some of our favourite media from past months! 👌

While everyone is raving reviews about Hades, I’ve been playing through Transistor, another Supergiant Games game. I don’t think that I’ve ever jumped into a New Game+ as fast as I did with this game. That’s two play throughs back-to-back! It’s beyond gorgeous, has a very intricate plot, and the combination of action RPG with strategy elements is genius.

Other than that, I’ve also been going through The Mandalorian after watching all Star Wars films for the first time since the start of the year. I really like the personality of the Mandalorian and his approach to solving fights, while also being an awkward lone-dad to Grogu. A fantastic piece to the Star Wars universe and very much worth watching!

Earlier in the year, I decided to finally play 2064: Read Only Memories to scratch my itch for a point-and-click adventure. It was a fairly straightforward game that touched sensitive topics in a cyberpunk setting. It’s quite well worth checking out if you’re a fan of the genre!

Now, let me tell you about Wandavision. The series ended earlier in March, yet I still have a certain jingle stuck in my head. The show’s comedy was top-notch, and while the superhero antics marred the experience somewhat towards the end, it still had some of the most creative ideas you can find in Marvel’s ever expanding repertoire!

Finally, we’re pleased to announce that, starting with this anniversary, we will be making reports on our current doings structured like these at the start of each month! This one is special being our anniversary celebration, but you’ll be getting a reef’s worth of news every month! Look forward to them! 👏

As development on Bunny Splash Casino continues, we will also be making dedicated extended reports for it on its own website. That way we can go into detail about the progress of R-rated content outside of the PG-13 limits of this website. You’ll still have to wait for it though. 😉

There’s a lot that we’re looking forward to in our fifth year! It’s hard to believe that, by this time next-year, we will be celebrating half-a-decade of Whales And Games. We really look forward to having one amazing report by then too

Like always, you can always keep tabs on our progress through our Twitter and Instagram! Alternatively, you can also join our Discord community server! We’d love to see you there!

Keep wearing masks and stay safe! Here’s to a whale of a time and to this new chapter of Whales And Games! Cheers! 🐳

Happy New Year! Here’s to a Whale of a 2021!

Post banner for the "here's to a whale of a 2021" blog post! Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! 🎆 As the holiday season comes to a close, it’s fair to say that the last year wasn’t easy. Even then we all withstood its misfortunes, pulling our best, the world kept spinning, and so did our lil’studio at Whales And Games!

First off, we wanted to thank everyone for the support that you’ve given us through the past year! Thank you for your comments, reviews, art gifts, trades, commissions, and your participation with our community! It’s these interactions that our studio is built-upon, and we treasure each and everyone one of them. 💕

Collage of 2020 Highlights with fan-art we've received, artwork we've made and games we have developed!

As we start this new year, there’s a lot of stuff we want to announce and tell you what we’ve been up too! If we were to make a quick bullet list, it’d be something like this:

  • We’ve rebooted Bunny Splash Casino’s development, our adults-only management-simulation and visual novel game, back in November! We’ve also ditched the Bunny Copulation brand and want, even with the game’s themes, to be proud that it is a Whales And Games project!
  • We want to give a fresh coat-of-paint to the Whales And Games branding over the year! We’ve refreshed our characters and some of our presentation last year, and now, we want to bring it to our core brand as well, especially as we start hosting commercial projects.
  • We want to address our previous projects like Roboto Repairaton and Colossorama! If possible and without conflicting with Bunny Splash Casino’s development, we’d like to finally release them.
  • Global Game Jam is coming up and being online for the first time! We definitely want to get in on that game jam!
  • And much more…!

These are very exciting times for our team! However, if there’s something we’ve learned with Whales And Games is that we frequently get ahead of ourselves. As much as we’d like to get into the details of each point, we want to get what we’re working on is bright and shiny before we show it off to you!

Collage with teasers for our 2021 projects, and games we are developing!

Our 4th anniversary will be happening in just a couple of months in March! When we get there and over the course of the next few months, we’ll tell you about what we’ve got on the blender! 😉

Hold on a bit longer to your sails, alright? If not, come down to the deck at our Whales And Games Discord or follow us on Twitter! We’ve been sharing development details more casually over on those places, so if you want a few sneak peeks, feel free to join in!

If you’re looking for Bunny Splash Casino news there’s also its own Discord and Twitter! Since it’s an adult-only game, we thought it’d be better to keep them in separate, age-gated channels.

Here’s to a happy new year, and a whale of 2021! 🐳

Three Years in the Making! Happy 3rd Anniversary, Whales And Games!

Happy 3rd Anniversary, Whales And Games! It’s been three years since we founded our studio and have developed over ten games since! We can’t thank every enough for being part of it!

Going into our 4th year, we want to focus again on games. Primarily, Bunny Splash Casino but we’ll also be developing other one-off projects for Whales And Games such as Roboto Repairaton! We’re also celebrating with a dedicated server event and participating in the GDC Relief Bundle helping developers in need!

Happy 3rd Anniversary, Whales And Games!

Happy 3rd Anniversary, Whales And Games! Just a few weeks ago we were celebrating the first anniversary of Whipped And Steamy. Now, mere weeks later, we’re commemorating the three-year milestone of our studio’s founding! 🥂

It’s been one huge adventure ever since we’ve gotten started with Whales And Games, from the time we got started with game jams and academic projects, to kicking off this new year full-time with the studio. We’ve had a lot of highlights over these past years releasing ten different games, supporting our ever-growing community and expanding our cast of characters!

Collage of our Past Years

While this year we don’t have any surprise announcements like sudden game releases, we still wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate this milestone! And it wouldn’t be a celebration of ours if we didn’t have some stylized artwork to share! Here’s Whalechan with a bunch of wrapped gifts picked just for you for our 3rd Anniversary! 🎁

Happy 3rd Anniversary Artwork

A Year of Footnotes and Details

Last year, most of our attention was focused on Whipped And Steamy • Cosplay Café, and its aftermath as well as the elusive Colossorama The Champions Update. However, as you know, the development of both of these projects didn’t go as smoothly as planned. Instead, we felt most of the shine last year was in the footnote details.

Collage of our 3rd Year

From our server activities, the crazy aftermath of Whipped And Steamy, to being spotlighted in events, to participating in Art Fight, having both of us co-founders meeting up in person for the first time! When we think about those, it looks like certainly had an eventful and thrilling year! For example, we constantly remind ourselves of some art we’ve received as part of Art Fight! Seeing so many people celebrating our characters fills our hearts with joy up to this very day! 💙

However, we feel the actual ‘Games’ part of Whales And Games could have gone been better during the past few months, and we feel we could definitely be pushing for more game-related content! This year, we want to make a complete 180-degree turn, and put (almost) all of focus on the games again.

One Splashy Casino in Development!

If you’ve caught up with our anniversary post for Whipped And Steamy from earlier this month, we’ll now be focusing our attention mostly into Bunny Splash Casino, our new adult-oriented management simulation novel game and its new sub-brand of the Bunny Copulation alongside it!

We’re currently getting started with the proper development of the game, and over the next few weeks we will be closing in concept art, key art, finishing off design decisions and getting started with prototypes!

If you haven’t done it yet, follow our new Twitter and Discord for Bunny Copulation as well be sharing progress on it as they start happening!

While we will be relaying most of our attention on Bunny Splash Casino, we will still continue supporting Whales And Games and making new character-focused art! ✨

Like we’ve mentioned in the Bunny Splash Casino announcement post, we’re also currently getting some final changes done to the post-jam version of our Global Game Jam game, Roboto Repairaton before we get it released. These changes are practically done and once the game gets out there, it will mark our 11th Game!

In case you haven’t seen some footage of Roboto Repairaton from our social media yet, Roboto Repairaton is both a single-player and couch co-op robot assembly game! There’s a barely functional factory that can mend and fix all kinds of robots, but putting them all into repair assembly is easier said than done! Grab robot pieces across conveyor belts and assemble robots together, but watch out for factory malfunctions! 🤖

Roboto Repairaton will be the first of the game jam games we’d like to get underway this year, and we hope to get even more done as the year progresses! However, if there’s anything that experience has told us from this past year, is to stop promising bogus-dates until we’re absolutely sure. You’ll have to keep an eye out for those!

Like all of our major celebrations, we are also running a small Discord server event alongside all of this! Participating on it will grant you the Anniversary Guest 🎉 role!

Head over to the #commands channel in the server and leave a nice celebratory message using the !celebrate command to claim it! We have all the instructions over at the server!

We also have some of our games as part of Game Dev World’s GDC Relief Bundle over on itch! Like many other developers, our opportunity to attend the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco was postponed because of COVID-19 pandemic concerns. While it didn’t affect us as much, a lot of disempowered developers were financially hit hard with travel and visa cancellations. Thus, we wanted to help contribute to ease their woes.

While you could already play them for free, the bundle features our Whipped And Steamy • Cosplay Café, Jazzy Beats, Onigami and Super Sellout, alongside a bag of 163 other goodies including games, assets and music! Bundle donations are purely for charity and will go directly to developers in need to help cushion the impact that the sudden changes across the world have caused!

If you have some extra pocket money around that you’ve saved for having stayed at home, we’d be thankful in the name of all of the game developer community if you could dedicate some of it to the cause! 🙏

We have a great year on the horizon, and we want to make sure we start the year on the right note and aim to continue helping the world! Over the next few weeks we will be getting development in Bunny Splash Casino and sealing-off Roboto Repairaton for shipping, and we’re looking forward to a year full of pleasant surprises!

Thank you once again for a happy 3rd anniversary and year year, and we hope that you stick along for another one discovering a sea of fun! As always, you can keep up with our Discord community, Twitter or Facebook page for more!

Finally, remember to wash your hands and stay safe! Cheers! 🐳

Whale of a Meetup, Colossorama’n’Steamy and Assortments! • Status Report – December 2019

Whale! It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a Whales And Games Status Report, hasn’t it? It’s been challenging to actually get one of these done lately but it’s time to get back on track and bring out a new freshly-fished December Status Report right before we close-off the year for good!

While you probably expect a ton of game-related news whenever we make one of these posts, ever since last August’s report things have certainly been a bit hectic with a variety of not-game-related tidbits of Whales And Games happening all over the place, hence the delay in getting around to actually write one of these again.

Strap onto your sea-horses because we’ve got a lot of small but very important milestones to cover! Let’s get into it!

A Whale of a Meetup and a Talk!

When we mentioned that we were extremely hyped for this year of Whales And Games we didn’t expect things to culminate with our co-founders meeting up in person for the first time in Portugal after seven-years of internet-friendship shenanigans!

Given how long we’ve worked together, it made for a very sentimental reunion which has started to change how we take-on WAG and our games going forward. Not only that, the meetup also happened immediately after one of us had just been relieved of their college duties and had just graduated!

To make things even more interesting, our meet-up was set up to align with our first public WAG talk at Game Dev Camp, Portugal’s highlight conference for game developers. Our talk was all about Whipped and Steamy • Cosplay Café and how we envisioned it to break the mould of adult games, refine our character’s writing further while developing it and how we fit everything into an ‘impossible deadline’. We ended up having a total of 70 people in the room, and a lot of them expressed to us how they found the talk really interesting! ✨

If you want to take a peek at the slides from the talk which are almost readable by themselves, you can download them here! If there’s enough interest for it, we might even make a full-fledged development insight covering the topics of the talk! 😊

Colossorama’s Time-Bending Finish Line!

This past month of November, we had the opportunity to showcase Colossorama • The Champions Update, along with Whipped and Steamy • Cosplay Café at a couple other events in Portugal as well! The idea was to collect feedback and further data that would let us wrap up Colossorama’s development neatly, taking notes of what should be tweaked, typos to be corrected, and which challenges still needed to be balanced.

In the end, we took notice of several small rough-corners, and even had to chance to tackle a few changes between the days of both events. The final high-score for the main Colossorama mode was 171 heads, meaning the overall experience of the game is much more balanced compared to previous versions of the game! Of course, some people also gave a try at other newly tweaked challenges such as Party, Trickster and 1-Hit Wonder.

Aside from just showing our games, we had the experience to live through what so many others in the industry do, by setting up our own booths for our own the first time! Planning, printing, purchasing materials, etc. Overall, it was still a very rewarding experience that also gave us the opportunity to socialize and network!

Whipped and Not So Steamy? What would you like to see?

As for Whipped and Steamy • Cosplay Café, things have been a bit different from what you are probably expecting. While Cosplay Café was also shown at events together with Colossorama – and got some very interesting reactions while at it – and at our talk at Game Dev Camp at the present moment, further developments with Whipped and Steamy are frozen in place until we conclude Colossorama • The Champion Update’s development. We really want to focus that specific update so we can advance with future WAG plans, including those related to Whipped and Steamy.

A few months ago, we released a collaboration with an adult-project, and we have been considering different avenues regarding what we want to do with Cosplay Café or other similar projects in the same vein. Some of these avenues include updating Cosplay Café including more refined gameplay and more characters to designing completely new mature or adult-oriented games. There’s really a lot of paths we can go down through, and we’ll be conducting several polls in different sites to gather feedback on what people would like to see!

We would really love to know what you think about Whipped and Steamy and what would you like to see us do with it going forward! Would you like to see more updates to it, or would you like to see us see a new project? We would like to know your opinion through this form or over at our Discord!

A Fishnet of Assortments!

Like we mentioned at the beginning of this report, there’s an assortment of things that have happened satellite to all the event preparations, decisions we’ve been making with our games and there’s been a lot going on with our Discord community as well. Here’s some highlights:

  • We’ve got stickers! Since we’ve been around some events, we thought it’d be a nice-gesture to hand something over to those who came to see our talk our play our games. We designed four different stickers featuring Polite Whale and Whalechan, our mascots to give around! We even made a public vote for the Whalechan design people liked the most!
  • Can we call ourselves an award-winning studio now? Because at one of the events, we were crowned with a #spotlight award and will be getting an opportunity to travel to Pocket Gamer Connects in London! We don’t have any games that actually go on your pocket other than Petty Puny Planet, but maybe we’ll find a game-changer there! 🏆
  • Holiday spirit might be around the corner, but back in October we celebrated Halloween with style, pitching Skeletons ☠️, Vampires 🦇 and Witches ✨ teams all against each other-in a set of Halloween Server Events at our Discord! It was some of the most fun of the server so far, and Skeletons took the winning spot! We’ve been working on a Skeleton Whalechan and she’s practically done (just missing animation now)!
  • We’re also changing the way our #creative rooms work on our server since a lot of artists have been joining recently! We’ve now got a room just for showcasing completed pieces, a room for work-in-progress sketches and scribbles and we’re also making a whole new dedicated gallery on this website to highlight some of the best work that’s been pinned there!
  • We’re not the types that like to waggle numbers around, but we’ve reached 700 followers on Twitter, 300 followers on Itch and 300 likes on Facebook! Our games totalled have also gathered more than 150K views across all the websites we have our games at! ✨

And that’s just some of the highlights! Honestly, there’s been so much stuff that has happened since our latest report that its hard to keep track of everything that has happened! We believe that rounds up things nicely though. 😊

That nails it for this time around! We talked about so many things here, yet there’s always more we want to have around coming 2020! Things are shaping up quickly, so you may want to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to stay informed about more and other future announcements!

Alternatively, you could get informed or hang out with us at our Discord server! Not only can you meet some of the artists we mentioned before, but also engage in more Whales And Games talk, gaming discussion and much more! Dive in and say hello! Cheers! 🐳
